What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

There is no specific definition for Cosmetic Dentistry but the general definition would include any treatment or procedure done to enhance the appearance of your smile. This could include whitening, veneers, orthodontics, crowns and so on. It can be said that a lot of procedures in Dentistry can be clinically required but also cosmetic, e.g. if you have decay on a tooth, it can be unsightly and also not good for your oral health. So fixing it up with a restoration can be also considered Cosmetic as well as functional. They are not always mutually exclusive.

Before embarking on specific cosmetic enhancements, it is always important to consider long term outcomes and ongoing maintenance of any treatments.

Crooked teeth? Spaces between teeth? Teeth sticking out? There are a lot of different bite problems that happen. The two main methods of treating it would be to move your teeth and get them in the optimum position. This can be done with braces or clear aligners usually. This option once done, as long as you wear your retainers, can be maintained with little ongoing intervention.

The other option is to do veneers. Veneers can be in ceramic or composite resin and usually involve some tooth preparation. Veneers do require upkeep and a set of veneers has a specific lifespan. When veneers fail, you will need to redo them so it is important to keep that in mind. Not all types of bites are suitable for veneers, so your Dental Professional will assess this and guide you accordingly.

There are instances where a multi pronged approach of Orthodontics to move teeth into a more favourable bite and veneers are used together to achieve the best possible Cosmetic outcome.
