Clear Aligner Treatment Procedure

Before doing anything, we need to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. A complete dental check-up and all dental treatment needs to be completed. A history of good oral hygiene and healthy gums is also essential.

We need to take records of you to prepare the right treatment for your teeth. These records include photographs, x-rays and 3D Scans.

Now you are ready to start your clear aligner treatment!

  • Your dentist will give you several aligners at a time, depending on your case. You will be required to wear your aligners all the time except when you are eating. Good oral hygiene is imperative when wearing the aligners as food will be trapped between your teeth and aligners more easily.
  • The aligners can also sometimes temporarily affect your speech. But most people adapt quickly to wearing the aligners and it is rare that your speech would be impaired for an extended period of time. Practice speaking out load and in front of the mirror to help you get used to your new aligners. You may also experience a temporary increase in salivation or dryness of the mouth.
  • Although they are fairly invisible, you can expect some people to glance at your teeth and ask, “What do you have on your teeth?”
  • Your ‘bite’ will feel different from time to time while the teeth are in transition.
  • It’s recommended that you wear the aligners 22 hours a day. They should be removed for meals only, brushing and flossing before re-inserting the aligner. If not worn for up to 22 hours a day, the corrective process will begin to reverse within a few hours.
  • You should only leave your clear aligners in your mouth to drink water. Anything else you eat or drink (or smoking!) requires the removal of the aligners to prevent damage.
  • Each clear aligner tray should be worn for roughly 1-2 weeks. Your dentist will let you know of your custom wear schedule.

Are clear aligners the same as Invisalign?

Invisalign is a brand of clear aligners, so yes, clear aligners are the same. They come in multiple brands – each with different technologies to suit your case.

Clear aligners can range from a few thousand dollars for simple, single arch cases to over $10,000 for complex cases involving arch expansion, jaw advancement or surgery. We recommend making a consult with us to find out an estimated cost for your particular case.

In some cases, we are able to complete simple treatment in a few months. Complex cases may take several years. The average case generally takes roughly 1 to 1.5 years to finish.

Occasionally due to the complex orthodontic nature of some mouths, you may need to be referred to an Orthodontist. That said, we do most Clear Aligner cases here in Cranbourne.
