Implant Overdenture

Implant Retained Dentures

Implant retained dentures are a highly effective solution for patients missing a full arch of teeth. By securing your denture to dental implants, they provide significantly improved stability, comfort, and confidence compared to traditional dentures.

What Are Implant Retained Dentures?

Supportive Smile Makeovers

Implant retained dentures, also known as implant overdentures are a type of overdenture supported by dental implants placed in the jawbone. These implants act as secure anchors for your denture.

Small connectors called locator abutments are attached to the implants, allowing the denture to “click” securely into place using built-in attachments. This creates a firm, comfortable fit while still allowing the denture to be removed for cleaning.

Key benefits include:

  • Improved stability and retention

  • Reduced movement when eating or speaking

  • Greater comfort compared to traditional dentures

  • Easy removal for daily cleaning

Fixed vs Removable Implant Options

When considering full-arch tooth replacement, patients often choose between:

Removable Implant Retained Dentures
  • Clip onto implants for support

  • Removable for cleaning

  • More cost-effective

  • Permanently attached to implants

  • Not removable by the patient

  • Feels more like natural teeth

The best option depends on factors such as:

  • Bone density and volume

  • Overall oral health

  • Medical history

  • Budget and lifestyle preferences

Your dentist will guide you through these options to determine the most suitable treatment for your needs.

The Implant Supported Denture Process

Comprehensive Consultation

A full dental examination is completed to assess your oral health and treatment suitability.

Any remaining teeth may need to be removed, and the opposing arch is stabilised to ensure long-term success.

A Cone Beam CT scan is used to assess bone quality and plan implant placement with precision.

Your dentist will determine the number of implants required and whether bone grafting is necessary.

Dental implants are placed into the jawbone. A temporary denture is typically worn during the healing phase.

Implants integrate with the bone over time (osseointegration).

Your custom-made implant retained denture is fitted for optimal comfort, function, and aesthetics.

Caring for Your Implant Retained Dentures

Proper care is essential to maintain the health of your implants and surrounding tissues.

Daily care includes:

  • Cleaning your denture with a soft toothbrush (separate from your regular toothbrush)

  • Soaking the denture in a disinfecting solution

  • Cleaning around implants using a soft toothbrush

  • Using interdental brushes or a water flosser for thorough cleaning

Regular dental check-ups and professional cleans are essential, as implants can develop inflammation known as peri-implantitis if not properly maintained.

Possible Implant supported Denture Complications

Even with a success rate of 97% (see here) – Full Mouth Dental Implants can still fail on even the healthiest patients.

Gum Disease, Diabetes and Smoking are the major risk factors dental implant failure. These can increase the failure rate from under 3% to well over 10%. Hence, its important that we carefully manage and assess these risk factors prior to any surgery.

Bone loss around an implant are also another common problem and may affect the integration of the implant to the bone. Bone loss can be due to gum disease (peri-implantitis) and if proper checks and cleans are not done on a regular basis, the implants can get infected causing their eventual failure. On rare occasions implants can also fracture if there is heavy teeth grinding.

Perhaps one of the other biggest reasons for dental implant failures are poor material and implant choice coupled with poor surgical techniques.

This is why it’s important to choose an experienced Dental Implant Surgeon to carry out your Implant surgery with excellent quality materials! Redundancy planning is particularly important in patients with higher risk of complications.

Frequently Asked Questions For Dental Implant Retained Denture Treatment

Faq Img1
Are implant overdentures comfortable?

Yes. Because they are securely attached to implants, they are far more stable than traditional dentures. There may be a short adjustment period, and minor adjustments may be required to achieve the perfect fit.

Yes. Implant retained dentures are designed to be removed for cleaning while remaining securely attached during daily use. If you prefer a non-removable option, a fixed implant bridge may be more suitable.

Costs can vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Number of implants placed

  • Need for bone grafting

  • Type of implant system used

  • Design of the denture

In some cases, treatment may start from under $10,000 for two implants, although four implants are more commonly recommended for improved stability and long-term success.
